UNIVERSITY OF AKRON OLSON DONOVAN TISSUE ENGINEERING LABORATORY
About this Project:
UNIVERSITY OF AKRON - OLSON/DONOVAN TISSUE ENGINEERING LABORATORY
Akron, Ohio (Biomedical Engineering) | 1,200 SF
THE CHALLENGE
Convert existing classroom space into specialized tissue engineering research laboratory for Biomedical Engineering Department, requiring biosafety controls, specialized equipment, and cleanroom protocols within limited existing building infrastructure.
OUR APPROACH
- Laboratory design incorporating LEED and Labs21 sustainable principles
- Biosafety cabinet integration with appropriate exhaust and filtration
- Specialized HVAC for tissue culture requirements (temperature, humidity control)
- Utilities coordination: gas, vacuum, compressed air, deionized water, electrical
- Vibration control for sensitive research equipment
- Worked within existing building limitations while meeting research requirements
TECHNICAL SCOPE
- Tissue engineering research laboratory with biosafety controls
- Fume hoods and biosafety cabinets with dedicated exhaust
- Specialized HVAC for environmental control
- Lab benches with integrated utilities
- Equipment areas for incubators, microscopes, centrifuges
- Support spaces: storage, prep areas, student workspace
- LEED and Labs21 sustainable design strategies
RESULT
University of Akron Biomedical Engineering Department received specialized research facility supporting cutting-edge tissue engineering research. Sustainable design reduced operational costs. Project demonstrated our capability with research laboratory environments and biosafety requirements.
